Do you really know how it is to life with bad sight? A lot of people couldn't answer that question because you could only say that if you really experience it.

In the minor Virtual Reality, I worked in an interdisciplinair group of students (ICT, Game developers and business students) called team Vragment. We worked with Bartimers a Dutch national organization for the blind or people with bad sight.

inSight is a virtual reality simulation for professionals, family, friends of people who have bad sight to experience how it really is to live with Macular degeneration (one of the most common bad sights in the world). Through this experience we can adapt and empathize with their lives. By doing daily actions in VR, the user experiences how people really feel.

My focus was on the storyline, experience, interactions and style of the environment. During this minor I learned what is possible in the VR world.

The Virtual reality experience video is a work in progress.

The story

The user wakes up in the bedroom. The alarm goes off, the sound is annoying so the user turns off the alarm. The user sees that he can't see really well but doesn't know what it is. As soon as the alarm is off the user hears a voice coming from the hallway: “Goedemorgen! Ik ga. Ik bel u straks nog wel even. tot zo!” (the voice of young women) The user noticed that there is a progressbar that is a little filled up. Let’s do some more stuff. The room is a little dark, the light switch behind the alarm is glowing in a color so the user knows that he should turns on the lights and looks around. A teleport portal is glowing in front off the closet, the user goes to the closet and picks up the clothing he or she wants to wear. The user looks around and sees the teleport portal next to the windows, the user goes to the windows, because the user will hear the birds and the wind from outside he opens the curtain for some natural lighting and turns off the lights with a light switch (sound) before he or she leaves the room by opening the door. The user hears a phone ringing and decides to see where the sound is coming from. The users is curious because earlier the women already said she would call again. The user ends up in front of the door of the livingroom. Nearby the door is the phone glowing a number 1. The user teleports to the phone and hears that there is one new message. The user want to listen to the voicemail. “Goedemorgen, met mij, vergeet u niet de afspraak bij het gemeentehuis? daar wacht ik op u. Ik had net zo’n haast kunt u misschien een broodje smeren met jullie zelfgemaakte jam. Oh en ik heb de krant op tafel gelegd. Ik ga door, tot straks. Doei!” The user listens to the voicemail and know what to do. The user teleports to the kitchen and search for the right ingredients. In one of the shelves the user finds several pots with jams and peanutbutters etc. With all the ingredients he will make a sandwich. The user makes a lunchbox. The user noticed that the progressbar is not full yet. He looks around and sees the newspaper the girl was talking about. The user teleports to the table and looks at the paper but can’t read it. He will use the magnifying glass to read the newspaper. In the local news he reads that the there are constructions at the bus station and the bus location is changed. With that information he wants to leave the house but the progressbar is not 100% yet. Suddenly the computer makes a noice and sees a big envelope as a sign there is a new email. The user teleports to the computer, and opens the email. An email from family that lives abroad, but the user can’t see the email or picture at all.. Only a silhout of a family. He turns the computer off and sees that the progresbar is 100%. When he is at the front door he noticed the front door is locked, next to the front door is a key rack with several keys. One of them has a tag with “front door”. He opens the door and steps outside. The progressbar is not full yet. so he close the door and lock it with the key. The user teleports to the side of the road.
CLO 3D

Virtual Fashion

In the program CLO3D It's possible to make complex clothing. I made clothing for in the closet and in the hallway. It's also possible to make other items, like curtains or a blanket like I did.

Then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me, that it might be the mirror of my soul, as my soul is the mirror of the infinite God!

Making the simulation more lively

Retouching the environment

With the programs Unity and Maya I learned how to give models materials, texture and scale the models. With those skills I made changed some rooms and made it more lively just adding more items or changing the color or sizes.

Then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me, that it might be the mirror of my soul, as my soul is the mirror of the infinite God!
